The typical formal dress coat is waist-length in front and on the sides, with long tails in the back that can extend down to as far as the back of the knees. The length of the tails has changed with passing fashion. While they were worn relatively short during the Victorian era, they gradually dipped lower with the years; they even passed knee-length during the early to mid-Twentieth Century. Today, though, the dress tails are once again approximately knee length.
