Why will your custom suit or shirt fit better at Alan David than in other stores?
At Alan David four generations of men's custom clothing experience inform every measurement we take and each pattern we make.. This ensures a perfect fit the very first time. At Alan David we take great pride in the accuracy of our measurement process. We guarantee the fit of your garment. We also offer the single most important attribute of true custom clothing, the basted fitting. Why is the quality of our custom suits better than other stores or other tailors custom suits?
All of our custom suits are made in a state of the art factory in our family owned New York workshop located just minutes from our showroom in Midtown Manhattan. Nothing is outsourced overseas, everything is made in the USA. Our product rivals garments such as those produced by Brioni, Oxxford and the Savile Row tailors. We use all canvas and only the best interlings to best protect our garments against the damages of even the most careless of dry cleaners. Our advanced technology not only ensures the initial quality, but also the way it bounces back from the hardest wear. In addition, our patented lapel and chest canvases prevent bubbling and pilling. You will pay a little more for this, but your suit will rival those whose are considered the best in the world. How long does it take to get my custom suit or custom shirt?
The fact that we own our own factory, located just minutes from our showroom in Midtown Manhattan, allows us to make our turn-around time for custom suits the fastest in the industry. Your suit will arrive 14 days to 4 weeks from the time of your initial order ( a 5 day rush service is also available). Delivery time depends on how complex a pattern we must create for you. If need be, our tailors can make your suit in our shop and can be finished in 7-9 days (emergencies only). Custom shirts arrive in two to three weeks. Rush orders on shirts ensure a 10 day delivery.Once my suit comes in, how many fittings will I need?
Usually just one., owing to the fact that we offer the single most important characteristic of true custom clothing, the basted fitting. Without a basted-fitting no article of clothing can be correctly referred to as 'custom'.
At Alan David, after a client's measurements have been taken, a unique paper pattern is created. No short cuts are taken. It is from this pattern that the garment is carefully hand cut, assembled and temporarily hand stitched with white basting thread. At this point, the basted garment is ready for fitting.
This is the step that dramatically sets us apart from all others. Trying on the garment now enables both the tailor and customer to perfect the fit and the style of our custom suit . The fact that the suit is simply 'basted' makes it possible for us to change the style as much or as little as necessary. For example, the client may elect to narrow or widen the shoulders or lapels, make the garment tighter or looser in the armhole, the sleeves or even the thighs. This guarantees the client complete satisfaction with the final fit and appearance of his custom made suit.
A word of caution, beware of other stores or manufacturers that claim to make custom clothing but in reality only make basic alterations to a standard manufactured garment. A commercial blue print is merely tweaked in an effort to convey a notion of individuality. There is no basted-fitting step involved because the garment has essentially been completed by the time the client sees it. Because no original pattern was ever made, a true custom suit could never have been produced. The only type of adjustment available to this garment is the type of basic alteration done to a ready-made, off-the-rack suit or jacket. It is decidedly not personalized in any viable manner and, most importantly, certainly not custom.
If you are an existing client already, your suit should be ready for you to wear out upon arrival. 7 out of 10 existing clients' garments are taken out without needing any further alterations. As a further accommodation, we ship UPS throughout the country (in a hanger pack box).If I can't make it to the showroom, can you come to me?
Alan David Custom sees a large number of clients at their offices or homes. We are available to measure you and have you select fabrics in your home or office, by appointment, at your convenience. We realize that your time is valuable so we extend this service at no additional charge. We are available every day except Saturday. The process is exactly the same in every way as what you would experience in our showroom, only at a place more convenient to your needs. Are your suits really custom or just semi-custom?
Since 1926, our old-world custom tailors have created what is very arguably the finest, hand-made custom clothing available anywhere. All of our clothing is hand-crafted in the time honored custom tradition. Every client receives an extensive measurement profile which starts with the most precise measurements including posture, shoulder slope and seat circumference. These measurements are then delivered to our local, family-owned workshop and within 48 hours a unique paper "pattern" is created to your specific physical characteristics. No two patterns are alike. We also offer the single most important characteristic of true custom clothing, the basted fitting. Without a basted-fitting no article of clothing can be correctly referred to as 'custom'.Do I have to take off all my clothes to get measured?
Absolutely not. Except for bulky shirts or trousers, no clothing needs to be removed. Why is your clothing not made in Hong Kong?
Alan David Custom strives for quality and service above all else. Our product is regarded as one of the finest among industry experts. Hong Kong suits are inferior in construction and take 6-8 weeks to deliver. While they have made great strides, their quality is fair at best. Their garments appearance and hand often hint at quality, but the jackets usually pill and bubble, especially when dry cleaned. Owning our factory also makes it possible for us to control costs and maintain a very competitive
level of value pricing – placing our price only slightly higher . Even with our rigorous dedication to quality and service the price of an Alan David garment remains only slightly higher than the Hong Kong product. We do not believe that quality, turn-around time and service should be compromised. The Alan David Custom garment remains a truly exceptional value in every way.I have never bought a custom suit before, will I be able to visualize it from a small swatch?
We sell more custom suits out of one showroom than any other single store operation in the entire country. We have a wide array of completed garments available which represent many of the fabrics we offer. Additionally, our experienced sales force will guide you through the process explaining the benefits of various proven fabrics, patterns and models. Our expertise might even lead you to choose a fabric you never would have before considered, but that you will be sure to meet with your overwhelming satisfaction. If I buy my own fabric can you make the suit or shirt for me?
Yes. We do this quite often. The process is the same as if you had selected the fabric from our own offering, except the suit or shirt takes approximately one additional week to deliver. This is because the fabric must be "sponged" and cleaned before being cut.I have a suit that fits me perfectly. Can you copy the fit?
Absolutely. In addition to your own measurements we take several key measurements directly off the garment including shoulder point to point, half waist width, button height stance, shoulder slope, waist and seat and others. We also ask to borrow the garment for one week to send to our factory for further more complicated measurements. Your garment will take a few extra days to deliver but anyone who has a favorite suit is sure to agree that it is worth the wait.Do working buttonholes or pick stitching cost extra?
No. All styling designs are included in the price of the garment (except vests and extra sets of trousers). Examples include functioning button holes, pick stitching, extra pockets, slanted pockets, double breasted, contrasting jacket linings, crotch linings, suspender buttons and more. What if I gain or lose weight?
Alan David offers alterations for the life of the suit. If you gain or lose a few ponds we will alter the garment at a minimal charge. The suit will still retain its custom appearance The most important part of a custom garment is the posture and shoulder measurements. You do not gain or lose weight in those areas. What are the custom suit prices?
Custom suit prices range from $950-$1,795. Custom sports coat prices range from $695-$1,295.
