The Bespoke Experience at Alan David Custom, New York, NYC

Pioneers in Pattern-Making and Measuring Techniques

Allow the four generations of experience at Alan David Custom to guide you through the custom suit process. Since 1926, our bespoke tailors have been producing high quality men’s & ladies full custom garments, including overcoats, vests and raincoats right here in the USA. Don’t be fooled by lower quality cheaper makers claiming to be bespoke tailors. The process of crafting a 100% hand made garment is quite challenging. It cannot be taught; it must be performed by high-end bespoke tailors with years of on the job training and expertise.

The process begins in our Midtown Manhattan New York City Showroom.

Step 1. DIALOGUE

A seasoned sales associate will begin by asking and listening to your custom garment requirements. There are many things we want and need to hear about including any past custom suit experiences, things about the garment you are most insistent about and anything else you feel may be relevant. Sometimes it is more important to find out what you DON’T want than what you DO want.

    Step 2. FABRICS Selection

An appropriate selection of fabrics will be presented to choose from. Alan David has all the brands including Ermengildo Zegna, Loro Piana, Dormeiul, Reda, Vitale Barberis and others. In addition, select from an array of privately sourced fabrics that are exclusively available at Alan David. These fabrics come from all over the world and are the essence of luxury.

    Step 3. THE MEASUREMENT PROCESS

Owner Alan David Horowitz is passionate about creating a perfect fitting garment for each & every client. At Alan David our expertise is in our ability to measure and fit. Every measurement is taken into account, especially in the shoulder and the posture areas. We measure for everything and we always get it right and that’s why we offer a 100% money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with your fit. The average fitter at Alan David Custom has over 25 years of hands on measuring experience.

The 30+ measurements that are taken are then given over to our bespoke patternmaker who assembles a pattern for each individual client. The pattern allows us to craft a true full custom garment as opposed to a made-to-measure garment.

    Step 4. BASTED FITTING

At this point your bespoke suit is assembled and temporarily sewn together with basting thread. The fact that the garment is simply “basted” makes it possible for our tailors to change the measurements and style as much or as little as possible.

Due to our measuring expertise this step has become optional and by request. For the hard to fit bespoke suit wearer, the basted fitting remains a valuable tool in the creation of your custom garment.

    Step 5. CONSTRUCT

Your custom garment is now ready to be fully assembled. All custom jackets are constructed with a full canvas chest piece. Unlike many half-canvas or fused garments, the full-canvas allows for the nicest drape with the least amount wrinkling. Your custom suits are all hand sewn together by old world bespoke tailors. Features such as pic stitching on the lapels and functioning sleeve buttonholes are hand cut and sewn as well.

Step 6. THE FITTING & DELIVERY PROCESS

    One Year Free Alteration Policy

It is now time to try on your garment and have one final fitting. The adjustments are usually minimal and completed in our on premise tailor shop with a very short turn around time. Any adjustments/alterations are noted to your file so your pattern can be updated for your next garment.

Your bespoke suits are ready for pickup approximately 3 to 4 weeks from your initial consultation (add 2 weeks for a basted fitting). Alan David stands behind its garments even after the purchase date. Any additional alterations needed within one year of purchase are free.
